Day 65 - Cabinets installed and we painted colors.

Today our cabinets got installed. We went with Maple stained "Kona".
We were there painting colors over the standard beige.

Big Daddy rolling the entryway from garage after Buddy Bill trimmed the room.

Buddy Bill Trimming the accent wall in great room. Notice the OSHA approved use of his ladder.

Accent wall rolled and Petey looking dazed and confused... again.

Kitchen cabinets starting to go in.

Me putting 1st coat yellow over yellow primer in sun room.

Me and Cameron discussing how to make the wall cap look at stairwell.

My wife said she would paint the purple in the master bedroom. This is as far as she got.
(Actually I turned her loose with a roller later. She did her fair share for a newbie :)

Trimming continues in master bedroom.
My dad joining the fray - rolling 1 of the accent walls.

Mother in the kitchen. Can't wait until she can use it to cook dinner! (please?)

Sample of quartz top we decided to use in kitchen.

Wishing it was all over and ready for move in.

  1. Love your photos. Did you leave the laundry as is per the plan? I'm looking for ideas to separate the laundry from the garage entrance.

  2. We changed it from the plan. For starters, we pulled it out into the garage 4' to accommodate a stairwell going into the basement from the garage. (this also requires extending the garage out 4' to make up for the lost space.) Then I widened the laundry room about 6" by stealing from the adjoining walk in closest. This made the room wide enough for a half bath right off the garage. So as you enter from the garage, there is the half bath immediately on your left (approx 6.5 feet long) before the cubby hole where the laundry machines sit. This did leave less room for the laundry area but I really wanted a parlor bath for coming in from the garage when dirty without having to track through the house.

  3. I love the idea of having a half bath right off the garage. I was initially told the "only" option would be to put the laundry in the basement, which defeats the purpose of one story living! Thank you so much for your response, your blog is great!

    1. That would be true if you were not willing to extend the laundry room (and garage) out 4'. There was not enough room initially. I am a graphic designer by trade and I spent literally a hundred hours + drawing and redrawing there plans, designing a custom kitchen layout, completley custom layout to the master bath, etc. Are you building a Montgomery with them? If so, I can share some of our ideas that we feel are an improvement over their usual floorplan.

  4. Looks great! Did you do all the painting yourself or did you work with the painter?

    1. We let their painter paint everything 1 color (you can choose from about 6 shades of beige but can only select 1 without being charged extra). The painter does 1 coat of primer and 1 coat of paint. I wanted that as a base for my paint anyways. Anything not beige was painted by us personally. Used Sherwin Williams paint as they had a 40% sale and was very pleased with how it went on. Still takes 2 coats but does a great job. Went with eggshell finish. We are very pleased with the colors look!
