We had our color selection meeting on the 17th. We were very pleased at the willingness to rearrange the layout of the house, move/add walls etc. Seems more real at this stage that we are actually building a new home. Preconstruction meeting scheduled for Oct 3. Loan should close late October and digging start around Thanksgiving!
Great stuff, Bill! Were there any surprises during the color selection meeting? Not enough choices? Extra charges???
ReplyDeleteAlso, any concerns about building in the winter? We wanted to have the house framed and dry-walled by December, but that's obviously not happening.
Great questions JJ. No real surprises during the Selections meeting as we had been through their design center before during previous office visits. We knew what to expect. We've chosen to go with standard selections on just about everything knowing we can easily change interior things later. If you want to spend more on the higher grade carpet options etc, they are available. We have a dog so the standard flooring looks just fine for now. We can replace with higher grades after Our pooch goes to the great kennel in the sky. the standard Paint options are light colors so will be easy to cover with custom colors later (better than trying to paint the whole house ourselves now).
ReplyDeleteI do have concerns about building in the winter but those concerns are pretty much restricted to the foundation. Like you, my goal was to have it framed and under roof by December and there is no reason that should not happen. Talking to other people I know in the industry, the general consensus was pouring the footers and mortaring the block wall was ok at 25 deg. and above. If it gets colder than that, they will need to put additives in to aid in the curing process. It's a common thing to do as many builders build all year around. I just didn't like the idea for me personally. They do have additional measures to help in cold weather. Keep in mind that if something happens because it was too cold, they will have an expensive fix to do which they don't want either. Talk to your Construction Manager about your concerns. Mine has been a tremendous resource and I couldn't be happier knowing he is really listening to any concerns I have and working with me on them.
Hope this helps!
